UPDATED: BlackRa1n stuck at the “Running…” Screen? Here’s the fix!

UPDATE: It seems some of this might need a little bit more detail and it also seems that some different Service Packs might respond differently. I have tested this on Windows XP (SP3) and Windows 7. Here are some more detailed instructions:

Step 0. Ensure that within iTunes you have unchecked “Sync Automatically” and under Edit -> Preferences, Devices, choose Prevent iTunes from syncing with Devices Automatically.
1. Ensure that your iPhone is on. You can see your Springboard. Plug your iPhone into your computer and ensure that iTunes recognizes it and preform a sync/backup/update.
2. Once you have completed this, close iTunes completely. Press the start button and choose Run. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del and check your task manager to ensure that any iTunes processes are closed, such as iPodService.exe, iTunesHelper.exe, etc. These must be turned off.
3. Ensure that your copy of blackra1n.exe is located in C:\blackra1n.exe.
4. Right click blackra1n.exe. If running Windows 7 choose properties, and then compatibility. Choose to run in Windows XP SP3 Mode.
5. Right Click blackra1n.exe and choose Run As. Chose the Administrator account and enter in the password.
6. Once blackra1n.exe is running, click Make it Ra1n.
7. You should see your iPhone automatically reboot and show a usb cable and iTunes, your typical restore/dfu screen.
8. You should see blackra1n.exe change to Running.. and GeoHotz face will appear on your iPhone. It will automatically reboot when done and that is when you should see the “Jailbreaking complete” dialog that likes to appear when you manually restart after no response.
I hope this helps a bit more. If I missed something I will try and squeeze it in right away.

So after I got incredibly frustrated trying to jailbreak my iPhone 3G with 3.1.2, I did some searching and came up with a fix. Every time I ran the BlackRa1n app, I was getting stuck on “Running…” and my iPhone would just stay in Recovery Mode. If this is the problem you are experiencing, try this:
1. Move blackra1n.exe to your C:/ (Copy and Paste it onto your main Hard Drive)
2. Check Task Manager for any iTunes processes running and close them! (Control Alt Delete or run taskmgr.exe)
3. Right Click and under Properties change to “Run in Compatibility Mode” and choose Windows XP. Then Run BlackRa1n.exe as Administrator (right click)
This has been tested with an iPhone 3G and Windows 7 and XP. For some reason this was the only way ti would work. Make sure your phone is on and in regular mode before all of this and that iTunes doesn’t launch (if it does, it wont work). If you still can’t get it to go, leave a comment and we’ll try to help you out! :0

It just don’t work. I tried it for 2 days now. I have an iPhone 3G, on 3.1.2, on AT&T. I use Windows Vista. THe blackra1n.exe is under my C: drive. All itunes processes are killed. My phone is on springboard. When i click on Make it ra1n, my phone clicks on the itunes-USB screen and the blackra1n says Entering Recovery Mode… That’s it. It does that for a long time with nothing else, and i end up having to restore after every time! Help please.
ive got a 3g with 3.1.2 on windows 7, and have done everything above, still getting stuck in “running…” mode witht he itunes/cable recovery mode on the iphone… any ideas?
I have the same problem as “Need Help” up there. I’ve even ran in compatibility mode for xp in vista and run as an admin from C:\blackra1n and it just keeps running. It’s running right now as I type this. I’m ready to smash it with a hammer!

I have been trying to get my iphone 1st gen to jailbreak for over 3 hours and then I copied and pasted the text into a text file and renamed and saved it as “helper.bat”
THIS SOLVED EVERYTHING!
I had tried everything and was about to give up but just try davids bat script and make sure your phone is completely totally off. Then press down that power button and home button after clicking make it rain and away you go!

People having problems with stuck in “entering recovery mode” or any other message. if you are using Windows VISTA, try to use in a Windows XP. I was having this problem, and tried EVERYTHING.. on Windows VISTA it simply does NOT work.
I tried in Windows XP where i work (because at home i use VISTA) and it WORKED!!!!
Hi, for those who are having trouble to get the geohots logo.
Make sure
1) You are running blackra1n in compatible mode if you are not using Winxp (right click on property)
2) Make sure all the iphone/itouch related programs are closed (use alt-ctrl-del trick) before you click on “make it rain”
3) Now, instead of letting blackra1n to load the restore mode, do this manually yourself by holding the Home button till you see geohots logo.
4) And yes the 3) is the most tricky part, you might need to try it a few time and it will eventually load the geohots logo. (It should take no more than 10-15sec)
5) If it failed, don’t panic, just hold the home & power button to shutdown the phone and restart from 1) again.
6) ***** DON’T INSTALL ICY ****** WITH CYDIA TOGETHER, IT WILL CORRUPT THE SYSTEM AND YOU WILL HAVE TO RESTORE TO 3.1.2 AND START FROM 1) AGAIN. BEWARE!!!
This may help you guys out. Most of the time people are saying go into TASK MANAGER, what they aren’t mentioning is you have to hit SHOW PROCESSESS FROM ALL USERS and you’ll fing more itunes stuff there. There is on called “MDSRESPONDER” or something like that and you have to kill it also. If you find anymore end those also. Once i did that it worked. One other thing i did different was once i click run as admin under the C drive and it runs in XP service pack 2. It would show the sync cable. I unplugged the usb cord, reset the phone and then i clicked on the BLACKRA1N that i had on my desktop and it worked. Had blackrain since the 13 and just got it to work. hope this helps.
OMG!!!! Just add .bat to the end of the blackra1n filename and it works perfectly!!! I was trying for forever and it finally worked!!!!!!!!!
excellent advice from Cole. I tried everything. as soon as i changed it from blackra1n.exe to blackra1n.bat it worked a charm! also i didnt change it to the xp service pack 2!
Guys if you are still getting stuck running… click right click on blackra1n… properties > security > give full control to everyone. I noticed not even the system had full control. hope this helps
rename with .BAT on the end go into the properties and click on the unblock button and then click apply, go to the security heading tab and click it, click on the edit button and then click edit and put a tick in the full control and click apply. Exit and run blackra1n. works a dream ENJOY!!!

Wow, that did the trick.
I am running Vista, with compat mode, and running as admin and I have been trying for days now. It worked the first time I tried then crashed after installing Cydia. Then I could not get it to come out of recovery mode to save my life. The renaming it to .bat worked like a charm. Fantastic! Now if I can just wait for Sn0wbl0wer to come out do I can downgrade my IPT2 back to 3.0.

.bat trick worked PERFECTLY. ( I stored the .exe on C:\ ) also got compatibility for Windows XP SP2. Then ran as admin too ( just in case ) and it worked

I just DON’T get it to work. I rename to bat (why would that work, I mean come on!) that didn’t work. I ran it as an admin + comp mode for Win XP SP2, didn’t work.
I’ve shut down all auto features on Itunes, still didn’t work. I’ve closed down all Apple apps, still didn’t work.
Why are these jailbreak progs such shit each and every time I gotta spend like 24 hours to jailbreak this shit. Please, can someone come with a REAL guide as to how to get it working?

i’m trying to unlock the iphone 3gs so it will fit the tmobile carrier..the blackra1n download worked pretty well but there are still no bars and it doesn’t say tmobile at the top or anything!
